ESPN– Police say Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon was arrested and charged with driving while impaired after speeding down a street in Raleigh.

Police spokesman Jim Sughrue said Gordon was taken into custody at Wake County Detention Center after being pulled over for going 50 mph in a 35 mph zone on U.S. 70 in northwest Raleigh around 3 a.m. Saturday.

Everyone knows that Josh Gordon is an absurd talent.  Only 23 years old and he led the league in receiving yards last season after missing the first two games on a drug-related suspension.  First player ever to have back-to-back 200 yard games. Youngest to ever go over 1200 yards (and once again, missed 2 games in doing so.)  Not to mention he plays for the Browns, so he has a rotation of nobodies throwing him the ball and the defense totally locks onto him.

Talent is definitely not his issue.  His issue seems to be that he cares a lot more about smoking weed and getting fucked up than he does about playing football and making money.

Getting found with weed at a Taco Bell drive-thru after your teammate falls asleep at the wheel?  It’s cool. It’s college.  You’re just a sophomore.  We’ve all been there.  Shit happens.  A couple more drug suspensions in college?  Understandable.  Marijuana feels pretty good when you smoke it.

But really is it that great?  Gordon had to transfer from Baylor to Utah, sat out for the 2011 season, and declared too late for the 2011 Supplemental Draft, probably because he got high and forgot.  He finally made his way to the NFL as a 2nd round pick in the 2012 Supplemental Draft and signed a 4 year, $5.3 million deal.  Compare that to the 4 year, $18.5 million contract that Justin Blackmon, the 5th overall pick in 2012 received, and you start to see some of the ramifications of his perpetual nug-blazing.  Now I’m not necessarily saying that Gordon would’ve been a top 5 draft pick, but had he stayed on the field in college and out of trouble, he would’ve actually provided some material for scouts to work with and could’ve easily been the Jaguars choice over Blackmon.  His talent certainly warrants an early draft selection and Blackmon had plenty of ganja-related red flags as well.

Whatever though.  Josh made it to the league and that’s really all that matters.  Clean your shit up, let your numbers and work ethic do the talking, and you’ll undoubtedly be inking a huge deal when contract negotiations come around.  Unfortunately, while he put up some unmistakably loud numbers, record-breaking even, he’s failed epically at cleaning up his act off the field.  As mentioned earlier, he sat out the first two weeks last year for a positive weed test.  Absolutely crushed it when he came back but, surprise, surprise, has since failed another test (his 3rd strike) and is suspended for the entire upcoming season.  He was set to appeal the suspension this month to hopefully shorten the length but I’m pretty sure this DWI negates any chances of that.

Hopefully the time off will help him re-prioritize his life but he honestly might just look at it as even more free time to get stoned.  It’s a damn shame too because with Johnny Football now on the roster, the two of them together would’ve been a lot of fun to watch.  There’s always next year but at a certain point that’s no longer the case and Josh Gordon may just end up being the prodigal young talent that could’ve been.

Side note: Who the fuck lives in Cleveland and then chooses to go to an equally shitty city for the 4th of July?  Raleigh is a horrible, horrible place.  This guy’s judgment couldn’t be any more suspect.
